Ideas?

I can't believe I'm about to utter (err.. type...) the following words but.....

Next month Robbie will be one year old.

Where did the time go? Seriously. It seems so unreal. It seems like he just came home a month or two ago. Couple that with the fact that he's still only 11 pounds wearing 0-3 month clothing and it just doesn't seem possible.

Here's the part where I ask for some help.

I'd like to do something for the NICU to celebrate Robbie's birthday. I want to take (or send) a cake up there anyway, but I'd like to also do something for the babies.

Now, I can crochet but really not well. And I can't sew (it's actually embarrassing. I can't even sew a button on). Basically I'm talentless. (well, I make REALLY cute babies, but well..I'm not giving any of those away.) So.. I'm looking for suggestions. Something that would benefit the babies that I could work on between now and then.
Would anyone be willing to donate in Robbie's name? (I'm talking hats/booties/blankets or something- not money.)

If I could sew at all, I'd probably make some fleece blankets (just hem the edges.. or do that cute yarn around the end thing) but again, not so much as a button.

So I'm open to suggestions. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

P.S. I might be willing to reward the winning idea with something. Again, I'm pretty talentless but I could come up with something fun!

I love the idea of donating something to the Nicu as opposed to money. What about those no sew fleece blankets? They are super easy, and since they would be for preemies they don't need to be very big, which would make them even easier, faster, and cheaper to make. I'd love to help you with this project, so just let me know what I can do.

I was going to suggest no-sew fleece blankets too.

I also thought of the no sew blankets.

Something a little harder, but still quite simple would be those taggy blankets. You know the ones with the different ribbons all around the edges? It would require some sewing, but not a lot of skill. And again it wouldn't require much material wise since they would be a smaller.

The no sew blanket look cool or- come on sewing people help me here- that binding stuff that irons on?

The no sew blankets are what I meant with the fleece stuff.. but I'm not fond of the unfinished edges.

CD gets my attention with iron on edging, though..

Anyone have a link?

Is this what you guys are talking about? http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat3456&PRODID=prd50043
The raw edges on those fleece blankets don't bother me because they aren't rough at all, and they don't really fray like other fabrics do.

I got nothing. A pattern for tiny hats.

Cheryl- the ones that I have, the edges tend to get a little misshapen after being washed.

We had one that someone gave us in the NICU that I loved.. it had some sort of sewn on edging that was great, but I don't know what it's called. It's like where it's thicker thread that wraps around the edges. I think I still have the blanket in a closet maybe I can get a close shot of it.
But I doubt it's something I could do. I don't even have a sewing machine.

Is it something sewn onto the edges of the blanket, or were the edges done with a serger? Can you post or email me a picture of it so I know what you are talking about?

I can't find the one I was thinking of, but I did find two others.
I dont' know what a surger is, so this might be that.

here are two of them.

to me that looks like a serger was used around the edges and not something additional sewn on. I don't have a serger, but I may be able to borrow one if you decide to go that route. Another option is a flannel receiving blanket, which would be thinner and maybe more usable for smaller babies. flannel is also fairly inexpensive and that would be really easy to make since it's just two squares sewn together. I'm definitely no expert in sewing though, so someone else may have better/easier ideas.

Here are directions for a no-sew blanket with the knotted ends. I've never made one before but it looks really simple to do.

I'm not a crafty person...but I do have some brand new hats/booties/mittens that I was going to return to the store...I'd rather donate them if a baby can use them...though they aren't preemie size. <8'(

Let me know!

Trish,

Why don't you take up a collection from your blog readers and IRL friends ... clothing, blankets, etc. to donate? Used, new, personally I don't think it matters.

I know when Bubba Joe outgrew his preemie clothing, we donated all but his going home outfit back to his NICU. They were very appreciative.

But - if you wanted to personally do something, you could make picture frames. Buy plain wood frames and decorate with glue and pretty paper, ribbons, baby stuff.

You could make the frames to fit around the baby identification paper thingee (how's that for a description) that's on the incubator - you know, the one with all the details?

Just a few ideas ...

and WOW! Robbie is almost 1!!!

I’m not very crafty, so I’m no help there, but I do have 4 pairs of super cute booties (not preemie, but NB size) that my mom had sent for the baby we lost in December. I had just put them away, but the idea of donating them in Robbie’s name to the NICU makes me smile. If you’d like them let me know and I’ll get them sent to you ASAP. I can’t believe he’s going to be a year!! A YEAR!! WOW!

I'd be up for crocheting a cute little baby blanket!

I have no ideas (confession: I had also thought of the no-sew fleece blankets ;)) but just wanted to say I think that's really cool of you to do something for the NICU for his birthday! And wow, yeah, a year--it hardly seems possible! That means it's also almost a year since I got pg, since I got my BFP just 2 weeks before Robbie was born!

I was going to suggest something to go on the baby's name plate thing, but someone beat me to it. The no sew fleece blankets that you tie or knot are incredibly easy. My grandma (in Texas so it's no help) is in a quilting guild and they make quilts out of fabric scraps for NICU babies. Maybe there is a guild by you that can do the same? Congrats on making it 11 months.
